The origin of Queens Avenue Surgery was the partnership of Dr Charles Hollins, Dr Ronald Brooks and Dr Dorothy Howse who practised from their own separate premises in Dorchester.
Drs Hollins and Brooks became partners in the early days of the NHS, and Dr Howse, originally single-handed and one of the first women in general practice, joined them later.
Dr Howse retired in 1963 and was succeeded by another lady doctor, Dr Elma Wyatt, who practised from 26 Bridport Road.
In 1975 Dr Hollins died while still working and Dr Brooks retired shortly after. Dr Wyatt was then joined by two new partners, Dr Peter Barwell and Dr Tony Bevir. After a long search for premises and helped by the generosity of Mrs D Cake, the previous owner, a group practice was set up at 50 Bridport Road in 1976.
This practice grew as the years passed and Drs Barwell and Bevir were replaced by Dr Paul Brown and Dr Graham Francis. A part-time partner was added, Dr Jacqui Fleet, and in 1992 Dr Wyatt retired and was succeeded by Dr Desmond Ling.
By the early 1990s the practice had outgrown the premises at Bridport Road due to the increasing number of services provided on-site.
We moved to our present surgery at 14 Queens Avenue which opened in Spring 1997. Dr Brown retired in December 2001 and was succeeded by Dr Rod Lewis in March 2002. An additional part-time partner, Dr Elizabeth Mew, joined us in February 2005.
Dr Mew left the practice in 2011 and was succeeded by Dr Madeline Phillips in January 2012. Dr Alexander Glover was previously our GP Registrar and joined the partnership in August 2014.
Dr Jacqui Fleet left the practice in 2016 and was succeeded by Dr Amanda Stubbs in February 2016 and Dr Robin De Uphaugh joined as a partner in January 2018.
