Improving Access to General Practice Services

We are working to improve access to appointments for our patients, in particular at evenings and weekends.  If you would like to be offered one of these appointments, please ask.  These appointments may be at a different site e.g. Dorset County Hospital or Weymouth Walk-in Centre.

Telephone Advice

Many problems can be dealt with by telephone and if you feel that this is the case, then a telephone appointment can be arranged. Our receptionists can schedule an appointment for you. The times of telephone appointments will vary from doctor to doctor.

Home visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception between 08:30am and 10:30am.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP or a Paramedic will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP.

Your appointment

However you choose to contact us, we may offer you a consultation:

  • by phone
  • face to face at the surgery
  • on a video call
  • by text or email

Appointments by phone, video call or by text or email can be more flexible and often means you get help sooner.

Cancelling or changing an appointment

If you are not able to keep your appointment please give us as much notice as possible as this allows us to free up slots for others who need them. Even a few hours’ notice can help us use surgery time more efficiently.

To cancel your appointment:

  • use your NHS account (through the NHS website or NHS App)
  • using the GP online system via the link at the top of this page
  • phone us on 01305 262886, Monday to Friday from 8:30am
  • reply CANCEL to your appointment reminder text message

If you need medical help now, use NHS 111 online or Call 111.

NHS 111 online is for people aged 5 and over. Call 111 if you need help for a child under 5.

Call 999 in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

If you need help with your appointment

Please tell us:

  • if there’s a specific doctor, nurse or other health professional you would prefer to respond
  • if you would prefer to consult with the doctor or nurse by phone, face-to-face, by video call or by text or email
  • if you need an interpreter
  • if you have any other access or communication needs

Referrals

On occasions the doctor may suggest referral to a hospital specialist. This would usually be at Dorset County Hospital or one of the satellite clinics in Weymouth, Bridport or Blandford. If however, you would prefer to be seen at another hospital, please discuss this with your doctor. Most NHS referrals are made via the e-Referral system, details of which can be found here..

Referrals to private hospitals can be made by arrangement with your doctor.

Training Practice

We are an approved training practice so for most of the year will have a fully qualified doctor (“a registrar”) undergoing further training in order to become a general practitioner.

Occasionally your doctor will have the registrar sitting in with them. You will be told about this in advance and are welcome to ask for them not to be present.

We work closely with the registrar throughout their time with us, usually one year. Please accept their services as an extension of our own.
